Toyota’s Gazoo Racing chief Tetsuya Tada told TopG
ear,
“The question I’m most frequently asked is whether you’ll be able to fit the 2JZ engine to it... ...I tell them, absolutely, please go ahead!”
Um, yes please!
I’m sure the stock B58 BMW single-turbo engine will be pretty tunable too. This is looking like it might live up to a lot of the admittedly excess hype.
Tada also explained some additional features on the Supra that will promote aftermarket upgrades:
Tada is planning to release specs of the car early to various tuners so they can prepare their packages for the car. There’s also pre-drilled holes in the front for hanging high downforce front splitters from, and a reinforced boot lid to handle big wings on the back.
Here’s the full story at TopGear.
What do you all think? Is Toyota doing enough for enthusiasts yet? Or do we still need to hold them accountable for never turbo-ing the FR-S/86/BRZ?

I do hope they sell well. BMW know how to make a turbo inline 6 better than Toyota these days, so it makes sense as a collaboration.

Frankly, I would have made it impossible to swap the engine, just to spite tuner culture* .
* I don’t hate tuner culture, I just hate the culture who insist this isn’t a real Supra because it doesn’t have a 2JZ.

Sure, lets just ignore the last twenty years of inflation

“Sure, you can swap in a 2JZ. At the cost of every single electrical part in the car, including the lights. Thus necessitating a $10,000 MoTeC or AEM setup to run your dash, plus $8 k+ * in custom electrical work for the lights.”
* - Remember, LEDs with drivers and CANbus . It’s not just “run a harness.” You have to design a whole new communications system.

I think Toyota needs to reveal the darn car already. And I thought Marvel was already over the top in teasers..

Aslong as we can ignore the last 20 years of engine performance. Product is 1990 specs. Price should be 1990s too.

The collaboration is to save costs, much with Subaru, not because BMW makes better inline sixes. Toyota doesn’t even make inline sixes these days, so how can something nonexistent be better or worse? Making a brand new line of inline six would cost billions of $ in R&D, for a car that'd sell in very limited numbers . Think before you speak.

Modern 0-60 times? Modern Nürburgring Nordschleife lap times? Faster than a Mustang GT? More horsepower than a Mustang GT? Despite being more expensive, the Supra had better specs than the Mustang GT in ALL regards. I mean, the Turbo Supra outperformed the midengined Ferraris (348, 355) of its day! If the leaks are true, this car is nowhere near the giant killer it once was. Do you seriously believe people are gonna be buying these things for emissions, fuel economy, and safety? There will be safer, more fuel efficient, eco-friendly cars. For the price, there’s a damn good chance there will be faster and quicker cars for the price. On top of that, one of the big perks of the Supra (reliability) has given way to stuffing a BMW engine under the hood. BMW engines aren’t exactly paragons of reliability. Sorry.

None of the things you’re saying about the new car are officially out; people are giving wild claims about it . Plus, you need to realize that the MK4 had other versions with less power than the twin turbo (which, heads up, the 2JZGTE in the old supra has less power than the new motor and it weighed more ). Plus Toyoda already said there’s plenty of space for an engine swap, I wouldn’t be surprised if it got released with the M4 engine eventually. What I do doubt is that Toyota will waste money making a competent straight six to go into ONE car and maybe a Lexus.
Lets also keep in mind that it will probably be quicker than a Mustang GT around a track given it’s smaller, way lighter, and set up for handling as opposed to a more comfortable approach like the pony car has.

I mean, if he’s implying we should 2JZ swap all the Supras, there’s probably an implied 6-speed manual in there somewhere too...

I bet you five internet dollars we see the mi d- engine Corvette revealed before the Supra. The frickin ‘ vette will probably have a manual option, and cost less too . I definitely have lost all wood for the Supra

Sorry, if a selling point of your new flagship sports car is that putting in the TWENTY FIVE YEAR OLD engine from it’s predecessor is an upgrade, you’re doing something very wrong indeed.
